What is a good (best?) glue for a leather to gloss-painted metal surface?

I've used PVC-E glue for felt to metal. Perhaps it would work for leather too?

Roo Glue is real good for bonding different materials. Its also what I use for keytops these days.

PVC-e or Roo Clear.  Roo Clear is a bit stronger.

Organ builders would use traditional animal glue - fish or hoof glue.

The advantage of the old glues is that they can be undone with heat or steam. The disadvantage is that they can shrink too much if really dry or come apart in excessive dampness, although in the latter case other things would be damaged at such humidities.

    Best wishes

The two primary suppliers - Schaff and Pianotek stopped carrying PVC-E within the last two years.  I'd have to wait until next week to ask them.   The Roo brand product is sold by Pianotek, while Schaff's version is LAM-300.  They are similar but not the same.  I found no specific (useful) response to Google query -  why is PVC_E no longer manufactured.
There still appears to be some availability through Amazon, Ebay, or from secondary (?) suppliers such as  Gemm, Howard, or Vandaking.

As with the question that arose earlier this week regarding differences between certain McLube products, the chemistry can be intimidating, past a point.

I've found PVC-E available under the name Aleen's Tacky Glue in the craft section of WalMart, Michael's, Lobby Hobby and Joanne's Fabrics.  Looks and works exactly the same.

Regarding Aileen's Tacky Glue available at craft stores, etc.  While handy in an emergency or usable for low grip jobs, it does not have the strength of PVC-E.  A few years back, out of curiosity, I tried an unscientific comparison of Aileen's and PVC-E.  I glued two keytops, waited a few days then tried removal.  The Aileen's popped off relatively easily with all glue remaining with the wood surface.  PVC-E was tough to remove and pretty much left equal amounts gripping wood and plastic.

One of my favorite glues now is Titebond Quick and Thick. Dries clear, and faster than Roo or Aileen's.
Because it's thicker than other glues it doesn't soak into felt. My method: apply to one surface, wait 30 seconds. Put materials together, hold for 30 seconds.
    voila.

Tite-Bond makes a glue for gluing plastic to wood called Melamine Glue.  It is their version of PVC-E glue and it works about as well as key top cement in my tests (key top glue tested very slightly better).

For felt to metal I think the same glue Rhodes used for the same purposes might be worth checking out. It can be found in typical hardware stores in tubes branded E6000. In forty year old Rhodes, it still holds.
