    Yamaha CP-60

Anyone tuned one of these things?  Many years ago I tuned a CP-70 grand. CP-60 is a vertical I'm pretty sure. Looking for pointers if you have any.  Got to do it tomorrow morning (Wed).

Hi Peter. I've only seen and tuned the small grands in this series. The last
couple of them I've tuned without any amplification. I've used headphones in the
past and found the unamplified process to be easier with a far better end result.
Background noise elimination is crucial since it doesn't provide much sound by
itself. Using the headphones and selecting one of the voices (string, flute,
horn, etc) adds some filtering that I think complicates the process. Being a
CP60 maybe it's just a plain piano sound. Good luck.

    Hi Peter,

I'm going to second everything that Larry said. I've only ever tuned one of the small grands. Luckily the house was silent which made it a LOT easier. I was surprised that it wasn't THAT much different. Maybe little extra fitness to set the pin. Best of luck!

    Hi, Peter, All,

Just in case there's interest, attached is a copy of the owner's manual
for the CP60M. This is the English language version.

I've tuned more of these than I care to remember.

    Kind regards.

    Peter,

I've tuned many CP-70s and CP-80s.  The Yamaha service manual has a very stretched tuning.  It is not a good tuning.  Here's my take.  The lowest 10 strings (E1 - C#2)  are 28" long and double wound copper.  They have the highest inharmonicity of any bass strings ever.  Tune these lowest strings by ear just trying to get the cleanest single octave possible.  None of the other intervals really matter, 17ths won't trill normally, 5ths will beat like crazy.  By any normal assessment these strings will be tuned too sharp.  These are used for rock n roll.  They may end a ballad playing an octave in the bass.

From C3 on up they tune reasonably normally (wound bichords in the low tenor).  There are 2 string unisons and no sound board, so they stay at pitch well.  The problem is usually that the last tuner was completely baffled and did a terrible job. From C#2 - C3, listen to the single and double octaves and fit them as best you can.

    Hope that is helpful.

Thanks again for this assistance...especially Carl L. for the specifics in the bass. Things went well. Over the phone the guy said it had been tuned 2-3 years ago. Ya right...I get there and it's a full semi-tone low. Pitch raise...2-3 decades maybe. His wife confirmed my suspicion.

One weird piano. I'm glad I don't own one.
