  • 1.  Wurlitzer Sustenuto rail adjustment

    Posted 09-29-2019 14:40
Does anyone have procedures to adjust the sostenuto rail on an older Wurlitzer C-153 Grand.
I have found procedure for an upright but nothing for a grand.
The damper lifters have the red felt knuckles for the rail.

The plate shows C-153. The key bed and action shows CG-155 w/ Made in Korea sticker. S/n is 74260.

    All help appreciated.

    Hi Jack:
Don't say that in an airport, lol!

The procedure is just like any other grand piano. The piano is likely a Samick 155. They made Wurlitzer grands for a while.

You'll need to establish the damper lever height above the key ends so the dampers lift about 1/3 to 1/2 blow. Set them higher if you want a lighter touch.

The sostenuto rail is adjusted by loosening the bracket screws and first adjusting the height of the sos. rail. The sos. rail blade should be just above the damper block tabs. Maybe a mm or two.

The brackets have two screws which act like rocker capstans, and tightening one and/or the other will adjust the sos. rail in or out (front to back). You can bend the brackets also. The sos. blade should be adjusted using trapwork (can't remember exactly) so that the blade is rotated to around a 4 o'clock position when viewed from the right end of the rod, at rest. You'll have to visualize this since you can't put your head in there, or use a mirror. The edge of the blade should be lower than the centerline of the rod, in other words.

Pushing the sos. rod with the pedal or otherwise should engage a damper tab if the underlever is lifted at the time. The tab will be below the blade until lifted by the key, and will be held up by the blade if the sos. pedal is depressed. To check proper function of the sostenuto system, I usually press the sustain pedal first and then the sos. pedal to see if the dampers all are held by the sos. blade. If not, make sure that all the brackets hold the sos. rod in a straight line, that the rod isn't too far away from the damper blocks (or too close), and that the damper tabs are all in a straight line just below the blade at rest. Since there are several brackets, adjust the screws so that each section between the brackets is working properly. Sometimes one or more sections will work ok, and others not. Rotating the sos. rail should also not interfere with the damper blocks, tabs, or anything else when no other pedals are engaged.

Be sure that the damper upstop rail is also adjusted properly, along with limiting the travel of the sostenuto using a capstan or felt/leather block, so that the sostenuto doesn't try to lift the dampers higher than the upstop rail will allow. Properly means there should be a little extra room for the dampers to lift when the sustain pedal is depressed fully.

    Good luck.
