Just a note to remind that Venmo claims they will start charging 1.9% for payments (received) as of July 20th.

Which is why I've morphed to Zelle. Direct deposit, no fees, easy and fast.  If you bank offers Zelle, take advantage of this direct deposit. The only information you give to your client is your email, nothing more.

Hope you already know that Venmo is part of PayPal and is set up as a social networking platform. They make you jump through a lot of hoops to turn off the social networking aspects where they publish to the world all the money you spend and receive via Venmo. Now they want to charge a fee as well? No. Zelle is the way to go. Currently no charge and it's 100% bank-to-bank with no third party, (like PayPal), in the middle. Transfers are completed in seconds.

Yea I understand that Venmo and Paypal are one entity.

It's very easy to turn on privacy settings so that none of your payments are public and I have always insisted that the individuals who pay me also have their privacy settings on if they want to use it. But now that they are charging I have no interest. Zelle is better it's just that nobody uses it.

    David,
When Venmo insisted that I provide 'friends' in order to sign up I backed away slowly!
In my small community a majority of my clients use Zelle. Free, easy, secure.

I didn't think giving them your "friends" was a requirement (I never did) nor was it required to have your transactions public, you can opt out with privacy settings, but the 2% fee has driven me out. I set up a zelle account with my bank and wrote Venmo a nasty letter which they won't read.

I agree with Mr. Servinsky. I've been using Zelle for more than a year now with no problems. It gives me an option for accepting payments from the digital native generation without giving the banks 2 to 4 % of my revenue. Besides, after I watched some younger cousins cyber-stalking a few of their friends on Venmo I foreswore ever using it.

The Cash app functions over mobile phones similarly to Venmo but charges NO fees to send or receive money from a linked bank account, and has NO social network crap. It’s also independent of the big banks (Zelle is a subsidiary of Wells Fargo).

I just looked into this, and Venmo only charges you the 1.9% if you have activated a "business profile" with them. The business profile apparently gives you some little perks like the ability to get tips and statements, but it's not necessary to receive payments. I just confirmed this with some test payments between me and my wife.

This is analogous to PayPal charging you a fee when your receive a payment for "goods and services," but charging no fee when when the payment is sent "as a friend". I've never paid that fee because everybody knows it's there and nobody wants to make their nice piano tuner pay an extra fee for no reason when I'm literally standing right in front of them. I don't even have to ask. Avoiding the Venmo fee should be as simple as deleting or deactivating your business profile.

I personally prefer Venmo over Zelle. With Zelle you're always worried that you're going to mistype the phone number or email address and accidentally send it to the wrong person. And there seems to often be a lag in the payment going through. Sometimes minutes. Venmo always beeps my phone within a few seconds of them sending payment. And Venmo's method of one person scanning the QR code on the other person's phone is so slick. There's zero worry about sending it to the wrong person with that. They scan your phone and your name and picture pops up on their screen. It couldn't be any more clear.

So I plan to continue using Venmo when people want to pay with it. It's still the most convenient way for some customers to pay, and there's no reason not to accept it.

Most of my customers don't carry enough cash for that.

The one thing that I don't like about zelle is that there's no verification step for the account you are sending to. You type in the email address but if you get it wrong it's gone. With Venmo you have an account photo that comes up which you use to verify.

Actually, there is. It gives you a "review" page just before you actually send the money telling you the name that person used to create their Zelle account. A couple of times I went to send money and while the phone number was correct, the name Zelle had registered to than number was different than the one I had. Once I verified with the recipient that the registered name was, in fact, them, I went ahead and sent the money.

    David,
The last client who tried sending me $$ by Venmo had no clue/verification that it didn’t go through. She just typed in my name, my email address came up and she sent it. Mind you…I’m not signed up with Venmo!

Haha. Well that makes it difficult. With venmo you choose a user name it doesn't go by email address
