Everyone who deals with a fire damaged piano should be aware of the fact that soot is in fact a highly toxic substance.
The suggestion that you use compressed air to 'blow off' the soot is especially troubling.
Soot consists of extremely tiny particles that will settle in your lungs and cause long term problems down the road.
Soot is a recognized air pollutant, a major source of which is diesel exhaust.
Soot contains PAH's (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) a recognized carcinogen, found also in tobacco smoke and tar.
Neither a piano tech nor a piano owner wants to work on or live with a fire damaged piano.
Here is a link to a National Cancer Institute page about soot.
