I was taking up lost motion on the shift pedal under this Steinway D and noticed the large cast iron (I think ..) support arm under the piano with a bolt running up to the plate.

I've never seen this before or possibly I've seen it but never paid attention to it.

Any idea what this is used for?  My guess is it supports the plate in some way....

If you search "Steinway glocken" you will find that Del explained it admirably on the pianotech list in 1997.

I won't copy and paste it, since I got roasted for doing that once before, though you'd think quoting our own list archive would be acceptable.

The thread title is "How to adjust glocken in Steinway D". Other sizes have one, too, not just the D's.

Its supposed to add mass and stiffness to plate in the treble, since there is no true nose bolt in that area, in their instruments.

    Mr.Stafford,
It's called the treble bell. The long bolt that it anchors is called the bell bolt. The bell bolt stabilizes the plate behind the treble bridge. Unless one is re-setting the plate during rebuilding there is no need to adjust it. Improper adjustment can damage the instrument. Why it's called a bell is beyond me.

I'd say the marketing crew was trying to associate the words "treble" and "bell", as in "clear as a bell" in folks poor soggy brains.  treble= bell= Steinway.

Yes, the treble bell...an obvious "oops, we need something up here" add on, to rescue the treble section.  Yes, the marketing dept was not about to admit why they added it, and as was correctly mentioned, dubbed it a "bell" for obvious reasons.
