Journal/Institute Salvation Plan

    1) It is virtually certain that the 2020 Institute will be cancelled.

    2) There is concern about Journal finances, and difficulty finding articles.

    Therefore:
    3) Ask all Institute teachers to write articles about their class topics.
Use unspent Institute funds to pay for articles and editorial assistance as needed.
This should produce at least a year's worth of excellent Piano Technicians Journals, making the #1 member benefit the best it's ever been.
The Journal can bring the Institute to all members!

Yes, by all means let's limit our discussions to the fewest possible number of people.

    Good idea.

Given Florida's belated and weak response to containing the COVID-19 virus I, for one, will be very apprehensive about setting foot anywhere in the state anytime soon.

Here you have it, from an authoritative source, that staying home and reading back issues of the Journal for the next three months will significantly reduce your chances of contracting coronavirus.

Excellent idea, Ed. I hope someone with the power to make it happen does so.

For clarification, the statement about cancellation of the 2020 Institute in Orlando was my conjecture.
The board will have to make this difficult decision in mid-May, and I imagine much creative thinking will be brought to the table in searching for ways forward.

How hard would it be to organize a virtual conference? Teachers could prep presentations to be given as live streams where questions could also be asked. I've attended a few such virtual conferences recently. I'm certainly not a tech person but since the conference is 3 months away seems like there's time.

I certainly will not be attending any convention in July no matter where it is but Florida is very slow to address this at all even with the high number of cases which means their curve is likely to be extended a lot longer.

    David-
Let's loosen the bounds a little further.
There's no need to confine on-line classes to a four day schedule.
Classes could be presented once or twice a week throughout the year.
A Saturday class could be scheduled to fit all USA time zones.

Yes they could.  But if it were constructed around a focussed conference such that the participants would be a group then the Q&A that followed would
have more participants and that might be a might be a benefit.

Organizationally it might also be easier as the streaming might be able to go through one central hub so moving from one class to the next would be easier. Of course having multiple classes going at the same time would be a bit trickier. Not sure how the technology works but I'm sure someone does

Having Saturday classes during the year is fine too but isn't  that a bit like what our current master series is about?

I, for one, love the idea of a virtual conference. I wasn't planning on going to the conference this year due to time/money constraints - getting to Florida from Alaska is a big commitment and I really have no desire to go to Florida in the middle of the summer anyway. But, I would be completely willing to pay for a virtual conference this summer.

Regular online classes would be great too, but a virtual conference is a slightly different thing and would be valuable for the community aspect of it.

It is a great idea. My plan was to travel to the PTG Convention this year, but that has a very high cost (plane tickets, hotel and convention and whatever, I live in Argentina and the economy is very bad and now it will be worse, 1 dollar = 80 Argentine pesos). Obviously, at the convention we have access to exhibitors, new tools, etc. but right now and for months, the situation will be in my opinion, very hard.
