  • 1.  Visual difference between vertical and horizontal cut Damper Felt

I'm staring at my various dampers felts, with a magnifying glass, as I think that's where I went south, regarding the choice of felt. I have both Laroueax and Japanese felts. I understand the Laroueax is sold as "vertical cut", but to tell the truth, I cannot see any difference in grain between the two felt makers. Both look like there is horizontal grain pattern, across the width of the felt. Exactly what should vertical cut felt look like, on the bass string shaped felts. The Laroueax may have a grain pattern which is harder to read as directional, than the Japanese.

The grain pattern on the flats can clearly be seen, but I see no difference on the shaped felts.  Any thoughts on this?

Sometimes for me, the best way to tell if the felt is vertical or horizontal is by teasing it apart. It will usually separate easier in the direction that the fleeces were laid down.

It's a tricky spelling, but the correct one is "Laoureaux".
Laoureux is a company which produces all kinds of felt for all kinds of applications, including a wide range of piano felts.
Even among the damper felts there is a whole buffet of choices.
Sadly, supply houses offer only a fraction of what is actually produced; piano manufacturers get their damper felts made to spec regarding dimensions, density etc.
So we must remember that when we try to describe a damper felt by calling it "Laoureux" it is a bit like trying to define a vehicle by calling it "Ford".
