    Hello List,

At our upcoming class in Tucson Rick Baldassin and I will be showing videos via a laptop, and I am wondering about what wattage rating will allow for high volume in a large space (imagine, too, that the AC is making some noise). In smaller settings such as chapter meetings I have been able to get by with my simple desktop powered speakers valued at only 5 watts RMS/10 watts peak.

I am not an expert in such matters, and this may be too simple a question, but I imagine some you out there can advise. Of course I understand that clarity of audio output is also part of the equation.

    Thanks for any input.

    Mr. Gravagne,
I would think you would just need a stereo receiver. I have two large speakers in my shop and when I crank them up my neighbors a 1/4 mile away can hear them. I have a yamaha rx-v293 that I got free on a piano move.

Conventional PA speakers are really hideous and especially for percussive sounds. Massive woofers accelerate more slowly than lightweight tweeters so the sound components are separated in time.

I'm a sound freak . . . not just with piano tuning, but being sensitive to quality of sound to speakers too.

If you can find drive units of between 93 and 97dB sensitivity, then even just 10W input will be enough to fill the largest space. In England we have  http://www.lowtherloudspeakers.com/index.html  which have inspired many but in USA you have https://www.commonsenseaudio.com/ with their Audio Nirvana range. All their 8 inch units are excellent

    Best wishes

Nick, you should ask the convention coordinators, I would think that they/the hotel can provide you with the necessary AV equipment.

If you need to supply your own, something like this would probably be big enough to be heard without breaking the bank. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ErisE3.5--presonus-eris-e3.5-3.5-inch-powered-studio-monitors

    Hey Nick,

Are you still in need of good sound for your class? I will be flying to Tucson, but if I can find someone who is driving from LA, and has the room, I can send my PA system with them. (Two JBL powered monitors with 15 inch woofers ought to do the job.)
