Would anyone know when Hamburg began mounting the sostenuto assembly on the belly rail?  I looked at a B from early 1970's which had sostenuto on action frame.

    Thanks

    David,

Just finished assisting a colleague on a Hamburg B from 1968. It had an action-mounted sostenuto, much to my surprise, as I was unaware they had ever done it this way. In the course of our inquiries concerning this instrument, someone (wish I could remember who) said that Hamburg did it this way, "…for a while," but had not done it that way before or since. It is the only Hamburg piano that I have seen with the NY sostenuto arrangement.

    Mr. Skolnik,

I've certainly seen stack mounted sostenuto on early 20th century Hamburg instruments. I had not seen any as recent as the '70s. The Kehl/Kirkland book has no mention of it. You might want to query Hartwig Kalb through the email link   service@steinway.de  as he has been very kind in reply to questions of mine far more foolish than yours.
