Baldwin Grand Shift Lever

I am in need of the shift lever for a Baldwin Grand (model M I think) serial #183923 (1926-1928 or so).  It was broken in a move and the movers are not owning up to it, nor producing the broken part (obviously) which could be welded if it existed (I think).

So...looking for a similar piano damaged beyond repair that this can be harvested from (I feel like I'm asking for an organ donation from a cadaver). Mounting blocks inclusion would probably be the easiest form of removal.

Please keep your eyes open.  Thx.

Peter, Years ago I bought 12 of these shift levers  because at Boston University we had 40 Baldwin grands circa 1984,  just before I retired from BU  in March I think there were  4 remaining, they always broke at the same spot an inch or so in from the  90 degree turn, i've seen similar requests  for them over the years but always had to hold on to them for BU pianos. Try contacting Louis Gentile gentilepianos@yahoo.com  or 617 471 2494  and mention my name ...good luck, i think though that Schaff sells one that does work

If worse comes to worse, go back and read my now-ancient Journal article on how to fabricate one of these.

    Thanks Del,

I don't expect you to recall the issue but I have them back to about 1980 or so. I'm sure someone with more digital savvy than me could search and locate the year and month.

It would have been around 2010 or a little earlier.

I searched/browsed the indexes of all the issues going clear back to June of 2008 ....  a bit of a time consuming process.  I wish we could search the journal according to author or subject.    I sure like to read that article Del.  Can you provide any more clues?  Other articles in the issue?  Something to catch my eye as I look again?

Any welder could fabricate one. It's just a lever.

Update:  Dec 2009 PTJ.  The Case of the Missing Shift Lever  (by Del Fandrich)

Good article but it's not going to work in this case.

I am still looking for one specifically from a Baldwin M (5' 7") If anyone can help me out here. The original was about 12" long overall length. Schaff's levers are 13.75" long. This would put the pedal rod way out at a weird angle. Not going to work.

    Help!

    Peter,
Two years ago I was able to get a replacement for an R shift lever by contacting this person at Gibson: Tracy McDaniel <Tracy.McDaniel@gibson.com>. Hope that works for you in your situation.
    Cheers,
    David

    Thanks David,

FYI, Tracy worked a facility that has since been shut down.  Learned this talking to Gibson customer service.

    So far a dead end.

It was written in 2016. I don't know which issue of the Journal it appeared in.

Send me a request by email (ddfandrich@gmail.com) and I'll send you a PDF file of the article.

No, apparently that was when I updated it for someone. Still, if you want a copy of the article send me an email.

The basic technique will work for any shift lever for any piano.
