    Hello Pianotech,

I am at a bit of a loss and unable to source a new set of wippens, replacing what's currently on a 6'1" Young Chang grand piano.  Serial # G064857.  Wippen Serial # 055065.  I have been unable to have anyone attempt to reach back out at Young Chang, and I reached out to numerous suppliers in attempts to find a match or suitable replacement like Tokiwa or for example.  Any direction, reliable sourcing or leads would help a ton.  Thanks!

    Hello Adam,

I'd contact Renner: www.rennerusa.com, or (480) 575-1700. If you call ask to speak with Chip Meyer. Chances are pretty good that they'll have something that will fit. In addition to getting the right wippens, also look into their sample parts kit. It has saved me a lot of trouble in the past. Best of luck,

If possible, send the wippen to Brooks LTD in Connecticut. The should be able to duplicate it.

WNG? I have a YC with a cracked plate which would be good for parts and a shell for prop piano or to install a digital keyboard.

WNG sells Young Chang style wippens. Used them on my 185 from the 80s.

Thank you for your responses! I have yet to contact WNG.  I will probably have to send off a sample.  Is it okay to run WNG wippens only?  I have heard it is preferred you change out the shanks as well?   I have very little experience with WNG.

Benjamin,  I have a Renner parts kit I haven't found a match in there.

Willem, I will contact Brooks and see what they say!

Jon, I would usually consider this however the issue here is a old wippen noise.  More so the newly acquired sensitivity towards it.  So, I will have to pass she is ready for something new.

    Thanks

    Adam

Is replacing the wippens really necessary?  If the issue is noise, have you identified the source of the noise?  I have dealt with noisy jack return on Young Chang wippens by replacing the punching that is at fault.  Other noises?  Is there excessive looseness in the rep lever?  That can be resolved by repinning.

Before going through the time and effort as well as the cost I would replace some of the jack button felt- the one that hits the spoon. You can try needling it with a chopstick needle or treating it with fabric softener but it will return . The sound the felt makes travels down the spoon into the whippen and goes forward to the whippen flange. because the rail is aluminum the sound is amplified . the more jacks hitting the spoon the louder the sound. In any event its worth trying on some of the whippens.
I agree that if you decide to replace the whippens talk to Brooks. I had a jack crack right at the center pin on a 1920's Knabe and they gave me a whippen that worked perfectly . You may also want to check to see if the action brackets have been fixed since that serial number is early 1990's
