  • 1.  Upright Treble/Tenor Damper Felt Configuration

It's been some years since I last messed with rebuilding an upright action. That seems to be the task at hand. Here are two pictures of the treble and tenor end of the plain wire dampers.

I know, I know, why would anyone want to replace those beauties? And yes, there are actually three strings per note in the high treble.....

My question has to do with the low tenor end. I'm a little bit surprised that there are no tricorn wedge felts. Is that not done on uprights for some reason? If it is, what might be the recommended schedule for them? I will be adding at least one over-damper on the lowest tenor note and I will be installing Jurgen's nice long dampers for the bass.

    hello Terry,
many uprights do actually have the trichord damper felts for the first low tenor plain wire string notes.  If this action was on my bench, i would put the trichords on the damper heads of the first 8 or so low tenor plain wire string notes.

I usually install trichord felt to G#4. Stitched flats.

    hello Jon,
any particular reasoning for installing the trichord felts to G#4?

Trichord to G#4 to avoid leaking. Stitched flats above that. Jurgen's long bass dampers are a must.

Am I correct to presume you mean that Stitched flats are installed on notes above G#4?

I agree with everyone else.  At least the first 2-5 dampers at the break would benefit from tri-chord damper felt.  The flat felt actually could work very well at the break, but the damper lever spring tension needs to be sufficient enough in those older dampers.  Lately, I've been replacing the damper levers and post with a new Tokiwa set. In combination with those extra large modern damper heads, you can get an older upright to dampen like a Yamaha.
