Hi all, this is my first time replacing a short arm back action in a mid-century Steinway M, early '50s.   I've done quite a few rigid tab back action replacements with no problems.  I had read that the original short arm back actions had poor geometry, thus prematurely wear out the felt at the end of the keys. Is this limited to just the Teflon short arms, or all?  Also should I choose to use the Tokiwa short arm replacement kit or just use the standard rigid tab kit and adjust to function properly in the piano? Any advice is very much appreciated. Thanks!

The Tokiwa "Short-arm" underlever and top-flange were designed to replace Teflon era levers.  These pianos had a vertically mounted flange, and much thicker tray,  and the replacement levers can be screwed right on the existing original Teflon-action tray.

If your piano has underlevers with flanges glued flat, I would suggest the Tokiwa back action with the modern type top flange and spring loaded tab.  Our part number is 05 601.  This kit comes with new tray.  You may need to re-locate the pivot pins when installing this tray.  Lever arm for this kit is full length, and would eliminate the "scrubbing" issue that occurs with the short-arm.  You can email me for more information.. a photo of your back-action out of the piano would help..  Randy Morton- Pacific Piano Supply Co. - email:  randy@pacificpiano.com
