Cleaning CA glue off of WNG shanks when pulling hammers off for whatever reason.

Treat it as you would if you were making dowels...run the shank through a die. I drilled a #12 hole in my Renner bushing cloth sizing tool. This steel seems to be hardened just a bit. It drills but seems harder than soft steel, I think. Not sure if it would work with soft steel...probably would, but you want to keep that sharp edge to the die/hole.

I like the leverage the handle affords. I did not wet the glue with any acetone. Worked on two spare shanks with glue on them that had been glued last year, so the glue was well set. Was able to insert the shank into a new hole smoothly, no catches.

JIm, Do you use CA on those WNG Shanks? If so, what's your method and viscosity of glue?  Has anyone else tried any other glues?  I think I remember reading that someone else used Titebond Q & T with good results before.

    Hi Matteo,

I use the recommended thick viscosity CA they supply. Ed Mcmorrow bores tight, sets all the hammer in place, and wicks in water thin CA. I may try this at some point, but am chicken so far. I personally would stay away from the titebond. I would need empirical evidence over time to change from their recommendations.

Would you spray accelerator on the back side to help prevent the glue wicking up the pores in the wood?  GluBoost would be my choice.

Jon,  I don't get what you are saying.  There is no wood involved in this process...???

Applying CA to the shank to wick into the hammer joint. The pores are in the hammer molding, so pretreating at the rear with Accelerator will help keep the CA from migrating away from the joint.
