Upstop rail.  Keeps keys from jumping out during transport or being lifted up to high.

To follow on Gary B's definition, as one of its functions is to keep the keys wrangled when the piano is turned on its side, it is also known as a shipping rail in some circles.

Ah, OK, so it has no specific adjustments required then. I tuned a steinway grand in which I had to remove it to work on a key. when I put it back I over tightened it and stopped all the keys from working, which startled me at first until I realized what I had done.

To the contrary, as per Gary B's observation, the sharps should be able to be lifted a millimeter or two before contacting the shipping rail. I might add that if the top nuts are not secured snugly, the bottom nuts will work their way down, and the rail will sink. Seeing hammers higher than they should be on either side of an action brake is a symptom of this happening.

    Hi Gary
This part is called the " key stop rail". This comes from the book Piano "Parts and Their Functions" by James Campbell. I purchased mine 30 years or so ago and I think you can still get a copy.  It's a must for communicating like this.  The part does exactly like its name stops the key from riding up the balance rail pin. If the keys are pushed up too high they will be able to move sideways across the top of the f try front rail pins.  Like was said it sit just above the top of the sharp key stick without trapping them (test by pushing down on the key stop rail if too tight the keys go down and the hammers will push up if too high the Sharp and natural key can be lifted a noticeable amount to thump when it comes down Which would be undesirable) 1 mm above the sharp key stick is a good number but how does one measure that?

Some vertical pianos have this part.  If a piano doesn't have a key stop rail, then the felt on the lower edge of the fall board or Name board will perform the same function.  Make sure you have the same space when installing this part and that you don't force the Key sticks down and the hammers up when installing the fall board.

There was a hack around here that called it the "Key Leveling Rail". Without regard to dip and hammer travel.

    Hello Gary,

Have you realized your two recent questions are related?  "What is the name and function of this" and "It wasn't like this before" are related in my experience.
