Hello All,
today i was to tune a piano of one of my customers. It's a Steinberg small grand piano without a serial number but i guess it's 100 years old, based on the fact that it has only 2 pedals (una corda and sustain) and only 85 keys with all original ivory key tops.
This piano was reconditioned with new hammers, new felts, bushings, key pins, strings, pin block etc approximately 10 or 15 years ago.  Very nice job!
I decided not to tune the piano as there is a crack in the plate (see picture). The owner had no idea.  He just noticed that there were a few notes that were horribly out of tune.
Question:  is this repairable and if so, any idea if the strings can be re-used and how much would it cost to repair the crack?
The owner is willing at this point to just give it away because he doesn't want to dump it as junk in a container.

hi James.
The owner wants to give it away only to a piano technician who would be interested in saving this piano.  Sorry that i did not mention that.
The piano was rebuilt some 10 to 15 years ago and then he bought it and put it in his office building where it has been sitting ever since.  I tuned it first (and last) some two years ago. The owner noticed the bad notes (indeed, were the crack is), just a few weeks ago.
the fall board has a decal which says "Steinberg".
I did post the pics of the crack and then 4 more of the piano.

Few unisons went bad?
I would make a plate 8 mm thick steel and bolted it over upper part of cracked plate. Make tread in the plate. 2 bolts on each side of crack would be sufficient. Bevelled it and bronze it for appearance. It will stabilise the crack
Main issue is stability of hitch pins. After steel plate bolted i would drill hitch pin holes , tread them M10 or 1/2 “” , , tread in bolt, cut bolt off flash , punch sides to prevent self rotating, drill hole for the hitch pins , drive in hitch pins.
No plate removing need

Years ago there was an article in PTJ about Metal-lock and Metal-stitch (sp?), a process that could be used in the piano. I don’t remember the date of the article.
