Have a old AB Chase upright with sostenuto and the wrapped wire that engages the
damper levers is of course  long gone. Is there such a replacement material, or suggestion
for a material that might work?

The tab was just two pieces of felt sandwich-ing the loop on the wire. If the wire is missing you can make them out of  music wire. Instead of threading the end of the wire( as they use to be), i would flatten the end on an anvil and epoxy them in the existing hole.
    Hope that's clear!!

I am wondering the same thing for a c.1900 Baldwin upright. Does the wire need to be covered or encased in a dampening material? Or can it be replaced with piano wire and not have any material on it?

I found electrical "bell wire" to work well in a 1904 Baldwin Schwander action rebuild. It's the correct size to fit through the action's fittings.  It is metal covered with plastic, but doesn't make a noticeable noise and works well. Took a few good searches of hardware and sporting goods stores to find something that covered all the bases. Tried recovering the original wire with hollow-core cord, but that wouldn't work through those fittings. Upside is I keep finding other uses for bell wire, which is good because one only needs a tiny amount of the roll.

I tried bell wire with the same idea- I tried both 18 and 20 gauge, but I had one hole that was just too small to get it through. It kept stripping off the plastic coating.  I ended up going with piano wire and am hoping it's fine given the little use it will recieve. Thanks for all these insights!
