John is great to work with, the quality of workmanship is high and consistent. I take measurements off the piano, put them into a spreadsheet, and email it to them. He catches my occasional error in measuring and calls me. The strings are very clean, even into the low monochords in the bass. Best of all, he has the Paulello wire for his bass string cores, and he will reproduce exactly the scales I have sent him.
When I want Nickel plated soft iron wraps for my bass strings, I get them from Heller in Germany. Also very good and conscientious.

I started with Arledge but then switched to JD Grandt and have been very happy. What I personally have found to a switch for the better, is the communication and the more pro-active way that John has shown.
I have not really determined if there is a difference in quality of the strings.
Perhaps they are of the same quality but I just personally like to interact with John better.
My 2.5 cents
Peter

I see a few bass string options out there: Mapes, Arledge, Heller, just to name a few. I've only tried two options and am curious how everyone else chooses or has already chosen their option of bass string maker.
What's your choice and why?
