I was reading the old thread on lubricating,,
If I had to clean up WD 40 I would use an electronics spray cleaner that evaporates the oils. Maybe a carburetor cleaner.
No one suggested that from what I saw.
However there is a tech here that I have tried to get to switch to protex for years. FINALLY he ordered some of Jon's CBL and when he called me because he had a sticky jack on an important practice room piano, I had him use some as a center pin lube, TA DAAA!!!
    Thank you Jon.
As for WD 40 it is what I call a penetrating oil. It has chemicals in it that help dissolve the rust. Spray some on a brand new tool and check for pitting a week later,,,,,,,,,,, duh ,,,,

An electronics cleaner won't evaporate WD 40, though it might spread it around enough to not be a problem (or spread it into the wood deeper to be a worse problem).

WD 40 will not dissolve rust, it will only lubricate and perhaps displace some water (WD 40 means Water Displacement formula 40).  WD 40 is basically an oil with other chemicals that helps to replace water on rusted or wet metal.
