A simple way to avoid headaches with the canvas tool roll for your flange bushing broaches is to cut a piece of plastic soda straw the same length as the depth of the pocket. This keeps the sharp broaches from getting caught in the canvas or poking through the material. Simple but effective.

And write the size on the flat end, mine on the body wore off. I also inked pin size above each broach

I label reamers and broaches by micrometer reading, not pin size. I think of pins in terms of measurement and not gage too.

Plastic swizzle sticks from bar supply work well and fit tighter than straws. Straws work too.

I agree with Chris. If you slide in a pipe cleaner alongside the broach and bend it over the straw edge, it’s an even nicer fit.

I gave presentation on many uses of straws, pipe cleaners and corks for our local chapter. That was fun! The materials are cheap, available and disposable.

When I first bought the kit, I used straws, but I soon switched to strips of cardboard. It's much stronger, so I don't have to worry about the broaches getting bent. Also, since there are four slots in the cardboard (that's about the width that fits in each section of the canvas roll), it's much faster to put away, since any slot will do. Somehow, getting the broach inside the straw was always a pain...

Credit goes to David Brown for the cardboard idea. I saw it in his kit and went right home to chop up a cardboard box!
