When I first bought the kit, I used straws, but I soon switched to strips of cardboard. It's much stronger, so I don't have to worry about the broaches getting bent. Also, since there are four slots in the cardboard (that's about the width that fits in each section of the canvas roll), it's much faster to put away, since any slot will do. Somehow, getting the broach inside the straw was always a pain...
Credit goes to David Brown for the cardboard idea. I saw it in his kit and went right home to chop up a cardboard box!

Subject: Tuesday Tech Tip: Flange Bushing Broach Tool Roll
A simple way to avoid headaches with the canvas tool roll for your flange bushing broaches is to cut a piece of plastic soda straw the same length as the depth of the pocket. This keeps the sharp broaches from getting caught in the canvas or poking through the material. Simple but effective.
