Hello, everyone. I'm curious if there's a section on the website that has information for beginner's? After nearly twenty years of teaching English public school and college, I'm doing something completely different. I purchased a course online, have a local mentor, and devote time every day to tuning on my Kurtmann upright (after starting on an old, cranky Baldwin Acrosonic, parts of which I have strewn around my house). Aside from PTG resources I may be overlooking, are there other resources (online or otherwise) you would recommend? I have Arthur Reblitz's book on tuning, servicing, and rebuilding. It's a little overwhelming. Thanks!

First off, Welcome! The link Larry provided is to the online academy, which is in the process of being updated. In particular look at the proficiency playground video files. When you're ready to start business, take a look at Business 201 videos by Tim Barnes. 

The Reblitz book is great, howbeit a little outdated in some of the pictures. I ordered Mario Igrec's Pianos Inside Out book a few months ago. It's awesome, definitely the next generation of textbook. The price reflects the quality, but definitely worth it. 

I also highly recommend Jim Busby's Piano Technician Tutorials eBook series. They are relatively inexpensive but very good instruction. Well expressed. Being an ebook allows you to also watch Jim demonstrate what he's writing about. For me, I learn best in this format - reading, then watching, then practicing (of course). They are available from Apple iBooks, or from www.pianotechniciantutorials.com.

I have a few additional (non-piano but very useful) resources to recommend, shoot me an email if you want them.

Welcome Robert!  You are doing everything correctly having a mixture of on-line courses, books, a piano to practice with and most importantly, a mentor.  When I first joined the PTG I was quite surprised by the willingness of my local chapter members to share their knowledge and more than one shop allowed me to work on whatever they were doing at the time.  I did not charge them for my time as they were 'paying' me in knowledge and experience. As to the Art Reblitz and Mario Igrec books BOTH are excellent references that you will eventually want to have.  Art has recently finished a third edition to be published late this Fall.  I find that the Reblitz book is the one for the beginning piano technician and the Igrec book is after you have some base knowledge.

At some point when you think you'd might like to go for the RPT exam, the PACE and Source books offered by the PTG can help guide you in learning for that.  Going for the RPT is more than just getting three letters by your name, it actually prepares you for meeting some of the most common issues you'll be faced with such as regulation, replacing a broken string and understanding if the piano is really in tune.

It is a rewarding thing to be doing.

Consider the book Pianos Inside Out by Igrec.

Piano Technician Academy online is from what I see a great wealth of education for a reasonable price with a whole new revamped course.

howtotunepianos.com taught by Mark Cerisano is they way I learned (I chose to study with him in person). He teaches methods and techniques that holistically improved my tuning stability, unison and temperament accuracy, and reduced muscle fatigue.

Consider a good sturdy hammer (I like Fujan from Tucson, AZ).

Most importantly though, do as much research in the small business field as well as technician field: seek out a small business mentor or advisor whether that's a friend, colleague, local technician, local college or community college instructor in small business/sole proprietor relations.

I second the endorsements of Pianos inside out and Jim Bushby's eBooks. Mario's book is a book for life, I reach for it every week, there's a wealth of information in there. Jim's books are hands-on, no fuzz, pragmatic information, presenting intricate stuff in a straightforward manner.
