That’s actually a very good income, which includes health insurance. I presume they will reimburse for travel expenses. Most college and universities don’t pay this much.

It’s also in Los Angeles where the cost of living is very high. That’s a basic starter salary for that area. Even if it includes health insurance it would still be tight.

Ben. I agree that it’s not the top paying gig, but, as I said, health insurance alone adds another $12K, and if you can get reimbursed for travel expenses, it will add up even more. On top of that, if you’re an enterprising person, you can tune a couple of pianos on the side and wind up make well over $100K. Even for the LA area, that ain’t too bad.

About 20+ years ago, living in LA, the 9-to-5 job I had was paying $40/Hr. My rent was around $1000. Except for the 401k, I pretty much broke even at the end of the year. $35/Hr would not come close to cutting it today, considering rent in LA is now $2000 - $3000 a month, easy.

I think this would be a horrible job for any but the aspiring young piano tech with no social life who could spend the next couple of years honing his skills. I think it would be great for that. But LAUSD is 960 square miles with 1302 schools. That's a LOT of driving. No, I take that back. A lot of sitting in your car in traffic.

Some tuners in this area are charging $300 for a tuning.  While this may sound like an exorbitant amount the cost of living (modest homes cost $1 mil) and the horrendous driving conditions make this necessary.  $35 an hour might sound like a bargain, but I was getting $71 an hour for part time teaching in 2015 and that wasn't great.

The job description sounds more like wishful thinking than anything else unless they have 5-10 technicians. Tuning, repairing, reconditioning, and rebuilding. How is it organized, who manages it? Is it a civil service position? Where is the rebuilding done?
    Btw, who pays indeed.com's fees?

I tuned alongside a LAUSD tuner a few years ago and he seemed to be OK (his retirement probably caused this opening).  He described a life of constant 45 minute tunings (all that can be done between classes) but he was happy with his salary and benefits, but this was over 20 years ago.

I would approach this with caution.

USC offered a position recently and their working conditions and salary seemed like a nightmare.

Something they might have omitted: Expectations: Join local union.

This is a thankless job for little-to-no compensation. School pianos are generally in poor condition and who would have to approve any work suggested?  You'd be told to keep near-dead pianos functional.  A dead end job if there ever was one.

I've been told there's at least one tuner at Juilliard that has been working graveyard shift for years.
