Has anyone out there in piano geek-land had success removing a non-bushed plate, like a Steinway plate, without removing tuning pins?  Chickerings and other instruments where the block is attached to the plate are a piece of cake, of course, but blocks integral to the case are more problematic.

I did it once a long time ago. I either heard about it, or attended a class. 

As I said, I did it once but it was so difficult because the plate kept hanging up on some of the pins, that it was easier, in the long run, to remove the pins first. And if I remember, even after I got the plate out, I still had to remove a bunch of the pins before I could get the block out.

Mr. Ialeggio,
I've never tried it but have given it some thought. It's certainly going to be easier on an instrument without the pins installed at an angle. Steinways are typically 5 or 6 degrees. My feeling is that removal with the pins intact will be orders of magnitude easier than re-installation.

Since many of them will be riding the front of the plate hole in not sure why one would want to do this anyway. An M, or any model with a horn screwed to the structure will have little to no forward wiggle room.
