Sorry this is "out of order." It is important to not damage the slot profile. I use a veneer saw, which like David Stocker's flush-cut saw, has no set to the teeth.
It takes about 3 or 4 swipes to clean out each slot without widening the slot. About 10 seconds per flange.
I also agree with cost-effectiveness of flange replacement. I was recently surprised that Yamaha sells the entire butt for under $200, so a set of flanges...
