I am looking for a permanent solution to fix whippens on a Baldwin Artist Grand that has cheating jacks that are jamming up the hammers. I thought I had fixed the problem before when I pulled the whippens and checked the centers with a gram gauge. The gauge showed tight jack centers and loose rep levers. Reaming and repinning seemed to have solved the problems but they reared their ugly head again perhaps due to humidity changes. I noticed that the bushing cloth looks rather cheap and lacks the white layer that is in better cloth so perhaps I should have rebushed and repinned the centers. Of course two of the notes that kept jamming where A4 and B4. So... yesterday to get out of piano hell I swapped the whippens from notes 87 and 88 and A4 and B4 worked perfectly. My theory is that the new pins on the rep lever center got enough friction from existing bushings to make me think problem solved but over time from playing and weather changes the bushings lost their grip.

The jack tops are slightly below the rep lever . The rep lever height buttons do not have felt on them and the button rests on felt that also looks to be cheaper cloth .

If the hammer centers are low friction, that will cause a weaker rep spring tension. The spring tension might not be enough to support the shank. 5-7 grams of friction on rep lever and shank center (same for wippen flange center). Jacks should have 1-3 grams of friction.

You might have to just repin the entire action, at least the swapped out ones. Any problems with the back action yet?

Is this a Samick or Young Chang product.

There is no real cure other than replacing them.

They problem is the short tail on the repetition lever spring. Try using a higher then normal amount of friction on the repetition lever bushing.

If you get the chance, replace them.

I've encountered where the configuration of the spring arm was such that it allowed me to bend and reconfigure the end of the spring for it to be longer.

I did notice the way the rep spring was rather compact with a long tail fitting in a slot at the jack . to adjust tension in the spring you use a screw and the coil in the spring is up near the rep lever arm. The rebushing of the cheap bushing on the balancier to add more friction looks like the best repair . Appreciate the good responses. BTW there were no problems with the back action. Several dampers where slow returning to rest but the problem was solved by cleaning and polishing the damper guide wires and slight slight easing of the damper guide rail bushing

Depending on the year it is either their own action or the Pratt,-Win action which was the worst parts of the old Pratt, Read action combined with the worst parts of the Baldwin action.
