Anyone have a recommendation for a specific stethoscope for use in piano technology? I've not ever used one, but I can imagine that a decent one would be very handy when trying to track down noises in pianos.

I have a cheap one purchased at a med supply shop. I removed the end cup and installed a length of brass tubing. Great for air leaks on players.

    Hi Terry,

Ditto what Jon said except I bought a cheap one at an automotive supply store and removed the solid rod and replaced with brass tube for player work.

The kind of stethoscope needed for finding noises in things like auto engines is probably what you need. They're called Mechanic's Stethoscopes. You can find them at most automotive stores. They're cheap. Harbor Freight has them for about $4. I have one and, honestly, it's never helped me find anything.

Yeah a mechanic scope,,,, a 3 foot piece of garden hose,,,, I found many a vacuum leak
The problem I had was plugging the open ear,,, greasy hands and earplugs,,,,
So the medical scope plugs both ears and makes it much easier to hear

"Three-foot piece of garden hose - brass tube"   I'm having some difficulty picturing how to modify a stethoscope in such a manner. Any pictures by chance?

mine was kind of a joke,,, When I was a teenager in the 60s, we took an old piece of garden hose, cut it to 3 ft and you put one end against your ear and search for sound with the other end.
That is the original Mechanics stethoscope.
That thing in the picture is something they try to sell you. It really doesn't do as goood of a job
