Yeah a mechanic scope,,,, a 3 foot piece of garden hose,,,, I found many a vacuum leak
The problem I had was plugging the open ear,,, greasy hands and earplugs,,,,
So the medical scope plugs both ears and makes it much easier to hear

The kind of stethoscope needed for finding noises in things like auto engines is probably what you need. They're called Mechanic's Stethoscopes. You can find them at most automotive stores. They're cheap. Harbor Freight has them for about $4. I have one and, honestly, it's never helped me find anything.
