    Hi all,

I tried to reply to David Smith's post of a week ago and could not find a way to do that except privately.

I have a friend with limited means but good shop skills that needs a set of New York Steinway current shanks with flanges. Long story.

David's post indicated he had more replies that the one from Susan, so I am just wondering if it's possible someone has a set of these to unload.

    Thanks,

    Hello Cindy,

Renner USA is still open for business as of now, and we're happy to continue helping piano technicians with replacement action parts.  We do carry the current dimension Genuine Renner replacement shanks and flanges for Steinway, and we have those in stock.  Please give us a call at 480-575-1700 between 8 am and 3 pm Pacific Time if we can help in any way.

    Thanks

Thanks, Lloyd. I should have added that the piano is a Steinway M, 1920, former reproducer. My friend says there are subtle differences, he doesn't want Renner parts.

Yes, there are some differences we offer, like our high definition flanges, designed to seat well on both the current and older style rails, and three levels of tapering in the shanks to reduce touchweight evenly from bass to treble.  We also still offer the dimensionally correct geometries for pianos from that era, including the 15.5 mm and 16.2 mm distances between the centerpins and the centers of the knuckles.  Thanks for your reply, and please let us know if we can help with anything else.

    Hi Lucinda ~

For a 1920 reproducer, you would be much better off using replacement parts.  We carry the Abel product (but the Renner would work too)
To your point, the reproducers do have subtle differences, but mostly it has to do with the length of the keysticks, which changes the geometry of the action and may affect the touch of this piano if used.

If you use replacement parts there are variations available, designed after the original specifications..  Also, at least in our shop, we customize each set of hammers to match the weight of the original set and select the best knuckle dimension to ensure you don't run into touch issues.

If you use new Steinway Parts they come off of the factory production line and are not designed specifically to this older model.

Thanks. I am asking for a friend, who has had many years experience in a top rebuilding shop.  He has the hammers, but the shanks and flanges that were supposed to go with them got put on another piano. Then the shop got reorganized and he is on  his own, with a decent piano but he needs the shanks and flanges!

Also, as I said, limited means, currently, so I just thought I'd see what was out there.

    Thanks all.
