Started working on a 1926 Kimball 5'7".  Just beginning the stripping of the current finish and it is conundrum for me.
Ebony finish, but lacquer thinner, acetone, nor Crown's Handi-Strip have any effect on the thing.  I don't believe it is polyester, as I can easily sand thru with 400 grit (wet)  There is a white base layer under the finish, almost looks like drywall mud.
Any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated.  Wet sanding this thing does not sound at all appealing.

The attached pics show the lock bar and the various layers, and the lock bar location on front lid, which appears to be rosewood, under the ebony finish.

No polyester in 1926. Invented during WW2, came to piano industry much later.Mentioned thinners will not affect even on aged truadional oil base varnishes . Did you try commercials finish removers?
