I tried it many years ago, but won't do it anymore. One can use one of those gritty erasures or whatever and get the speaking portion of the string relatively clean, but most or much of the string is inaccessible - tuning pin area, bridge pin area, etc. - that IMHO, clean part of the string just makes the uncleaned portion stand out so much more. Just looks bad IMHO.
