    Hi Everyone,
What are your thoughts on cleaning old dirty strings?

I looked it up on google a couple of weeks ago and someone said IsoPropol
    Alcohol, 70%.

I cleaned some mid-range triad strings, carefully, using a soft cloth and
not going crazy about getting at the backs of the strings (piano is an
    upright).

No harm was done, but I am still wondering if any good was done...

I tried it many years ago, but won't do it anymore. One can use one of those gritty erasures or whatever and get the speaking portion of the string relatively clean, but most or much of the string is inaccessible - tuning pin area, bridge pin area, etc. - that IMHO, clean part of the string just makes the uncleaned portion stand out so much more. Just looks bad IMHO.

When I was a boy the tuner swore that rust on strings took the shine off the sound . . .
