I tuned an Essex grand piano recently and there was a buzz throughout that I was unable to locate. It's quite maddening and I'm hoping I can describe the situation and gain some insight.

The client described the buzz as appearing when B4 or C5 were played.

I tested and agreed but found it most apparent on A sharp 4  and every other A sharp up and throughout the keyboard.

The buzz is difficult to describe... it's not a sizzle like loose hardware or hinge. screws might make. It sounds like a sound boardeee type of buzz, like something might be on the soundboard resonating, but it seems like it's moving!

I removed the action and cleaned the piano, I found pencils, paper clips, guitar pics, small rocks (yep) and an assortment of oddities that I was sure were responsible for the buzzing but when I left the buzz was still there.

I tightened every screw I had access to, including action screws and case screws.

It's a wierd buzz, I hear it in the bass on E1, then on A# 2 in the bass - centered near the bass bridge.

Then when I play A# 4  the buzz appears to come from the treble side of the piano.   Same with A#5 and above.

I have no idea what is causing this! My sense is that it has to be something foreign on the soundboard.

This is consistent with all the other artifacts found inside the piano.

The pianists are young kids, ages 5 to 10 and it's possible (likely?) there are unknown items buzzing on the soundboard, under the plate.

    Any thoughts on this scenario?

    Yes, blow off the
soundboard, especially the part under the plate, with either an air compressor or a leaf blower.

Or use flat steel like for cleaning the board and run it under the plate

Before you go crazy get an inspection mirror or an electronic inspection scope ( I have a Ryobi and another called the Seeker ) and a powerful led flashlight and explore under the solid areas of the plate by using the plate relief holes. I found a diamond bracelet this way but didn't get to keep it ? there is apt to be a coin, screw , matchbox car, picture hook . To extract you may need a flexible hose attachment on a powerful shop vac. How about recording it so we can all listen ?

Ironically I am tuning an Essex tomorrow after I do some troubleshooting on the Piano Disc player system . What size/model/serial number is it ? I will take some pictures tomorrow to make it easier for me to figure out possible places to look. By any chance does it have an electronic player system installed ? some components or wires could be touching the board or rattling at various frequencies.....

Check for plastic/nylon soundboard buttons....or even wooden ones. I had this
happen on a Kawai grand. The buzz was not a bass pitch, but a higher
pitch, due to the size of the button, I guess.

The button was in the tail but hard to get to as
the rear leg apron prevented me from getting in there. I was able to
work some glue under it and with a right angle screw driver just manage
to tighten it back down and the buzz went away.  Since I also glued
it, it has not returned. (Cross your fingers)....

This might be one culprit you missed.

Thanks to Don Manino for clueing me in on another post of his on this very same issue.
