I'm looking for this tool I bought it from somewhere (can't remember now).  Broke it so need to replace.  Looks like this.  For chucking into a drill to remove capstans.

The WNG tool is round and will loosen up in the chuck. I made one out of a hex key (Allen Wrench) for a positive grip.

Hex key?  Great idea. I think I made mine out of a coat hanger.

A coat hanger is too soft of a metal for this application.

My coat hanger got me through three sets of capstans without twisting breaking up, but I still like your hex key idea better.

I might have gotten it from WNG, thanks.  I found it worked really well and didn't loosen up in the but a broke it off with some frozen capstans.  I've made them out of thick coat hangers for years and they work fine but it has to be the thick wire.  An allen wrench would be fine both but you would have to add some bends otherwise it won't turn around the center.

Hi David, eighth inch welding rod comes to mind  ...  or some appropriate diameter.  One 4 foot stick will last you a few years.  An Allen wrench is hardened and therefore brittle but if you can get the bends in it without it breaking, then you have a hex end to put in the chuck.  Mayhaps if you were to put a very small bend in the chuck end it would keep it from turning in the chuck.

If the chuck can't grasp the wire snug enough I'd probably consider adding a larger chunk of cold rolled on the chuck end of it  ....  drilling a hole a hair smaller, heating it up and inserting the tool in the hole  ......  maybe.  Or drilling a really tiny hole through the two pieces and pinning it.

But then that's an awful lot of shop time to generate a tool.  Now that I think about this a bit, that'd be a great way to use up some time while this pandemic wreaks total havoc on our lives.

I keep a stock of 3/32" stainless welding rod that I get at a local welding supply to make all kinds of tools from. I made my capstan tool from this stock, and it literally takes minutes. Chucked in my straight line Milwaukee driver drill, with hex shank chuck, it never slips.  I have made a couple over the years as I loose track of them occasionally...but its minutes to make. Just bend to a 90 deg angle in the vise.

WNG sells those for about $1.50. Or you can get them free if you stop by their booth at a convention.

I made one out of thick piano wire. I've got more of that lying around than welding rods or spare Allen keys. And it's certainly stiff enough.

Now that I think about the chuck problem (I didn't experience any slippage) I suppose you could use the hexagonal wire of a universal bass string. In fact, I can't think of any better use for universal bass strings. 😂

If I'm not mistaken, drill chucks wear to the point that they no longer grip very well.  I like the universal string wire idea.  A fitting usage indeed!!

Joe Goss at Mother Goose Tools makes one mounted in a 1/4" hex shank.  You'll need to modify the drive portion slightly to adapt it to a standard power drive set up but it's not hard.  Alternatively you can get the pre-drilled (three sizes) adapters and mount a home-made tool.  the  web site is : www.mothergoosetools.com
It's a little twitchy but it works eventually.

    Hi Glen -
It's certainly worth something.  It has one advantage in particular:  It's completely 'in-line', thus minimizing the potential for wobble that could occur with even slight misalignment of bends in the wire or hex key.
    a few questions:
    - is this what you use?
    - how do you drive it?  not indicated in any of the photos
    - ever have pins come flying out?
    - can you figure out how to make one for hex capstans?

In answer to your questions:  Yes, it is what I use.  It is made from a 1/2" drive 3/8" socket and can be driven with a drill motor or a brace.  I use a brace. This also works for driving in new capstans.  The pin doesn't fly out since the socket puts side pressure against  it in use.  The pin is a bridge pin.  I don't have a solution for the hex capstan.

    David,

For hex-head capstans, an appropriately sized ratcheting open-end wrench might be a (relatively) good way to go.

    Thanks Alan,
When I get back to my shop I can send a picture of the 'crank' I made that ended up working pretty well.  I just know that a minimal degree of machining skills could produce a 'power' hex version of this tool.  The demand is deafening.
