Unglued hammer felts

I realize the best repair is replacement. However.....if one is going to try regluing what do you think is the best way??

The piano is not worth the price of a new set of hammers.

Thick Super Glue on the molding, white glue on the felt. Clamp. I had an upright with that recently.

Bumped this thread.  Does anyone know where I can find a clamp like the one Jon showed in the picture?

    Thanks

I don't know where he got the clamp, but a needle nose vice grips works very well. (Or is it vise grips?)

Kent is right, it is an old drafting divider. This one is nice because it opens wide and has a quick release nut which slides along the threading, makes it handy not having to screw the nut to expand or collapse.  The hammer in the photo was only partially unglued which didn't need extreme clamping force.   I use it mostly for setting action spread and checking tail arc (a tip from Roger Jolly).

Sometimes my challenge in finding information in the archives is picking the right search terms.  In this case I recommend entering the following in the search box on the top right corner of this page:

    Clamping hammer felt

Some simple and some rather elegant but elaborate ideas will appear.  I like the one by Jack Houweling, but it involves some time building, and the removal of the hammer assemblies from the action.  Probably not what you have in mind!

    All the best to you.

Jon.....loving that  pin point 'clamp'  yes  Baldwin Hamilton's from the 1980's  of which there are plenty are particularly prone, tried the twine method, recently not pretty but effective are twist ties with same cocktail thick CA and white glue, however if there are neighboring hammers to be fixed there is a chance that the tie wraps will rub against each other....

Melissa, there was a good thread on this same topic in July 2019 -- search on "Hammer Felts Unglued."

In my case, using one approach, a before and after example is shown in the following two pictures.

I've do that too. It's a LOT of work. First, you have to glue the hammer felt back to the molding. Then you have to drill two holes.
Then you have to construct the u-shaped wire. Then you feed the 'staple' thru the holes and press and hold the loop end into the felt.
Then grip the loose ends with pliers and twist with the shank in the way. Bend the twisted portion and press to the felt.
You can't place the twist on the backside of the hammer because it will catch on the back check.  This is perhaps the most expensive repair.

One of my chapter members did a presentation a few months ago using glue and zip-ties. It was fast and worked well. You can remove the zip-ties afterwards or leave them and just cut off the long end.

Benjamin.. I actually thought of this as well and may still do it.  This is for an old spinet with sentimental value to the customer

Thanks to Jon for the process of CA Glue on the molding and white glue on the felt.  I am going to use Titebond as I do not have any carpenters glue on hand.

I thought about using the method of the upholstery string, but I failed that portion of Boy Scouts where I learned to tie a slipknot!  :-)

The two-glue method is thanks to Susan Kline.

I'm so glad I do not work on these old junkers any longer. Thankfully, I'm at a point where I can select what I what to work on and not take the good with the bad.  It's called semi-retirement.
