Which type of cloth should be used for wiping down and wiping off dust from pianos? Cotton? Polyester? The microfiber cloths I'm currently using seem rough and velcro-like...plus, even when they are washed they still retain little bits of wood particles in them from a previous piano.

    Coburn

Lacquer finished pianos can be wiped down with a soft cloth.
Polyester finished pianos need a special soft cloth to keep them from scratching the surface.
Cory Products sell a very soft cloth that is suitable for polyester finished pianos.

Something soft and lint-free, used slightly damp. It's the dampness which is important.

Have always used a wet (damp) chamois.

I have used unscented Swifters for several years and love them for removing dust.  I have not had any scratching problems with fresh Swifters on polyester finishes and they can pick up a prodigious amount of dust, even from under keys and bottom boards on old uprights.
They don't replace a vacuum cleaner, but work well if you don't want to drag one in or disturb your customer's closet monster.
