So that's what it is, Geoff! Several times in the past I have experienced a spasm/fluttering sensation when tuning notes in the area of G5. It would only happen when I had a cold. I think mainly in my right ear. I am reassured to know that it is identified as a known syndrome and not my imagination. I had no idea there are muscles associated with the eardrum. I never tried anything to reduce the symptoms as it was not painful, just a bit annoying.
As to tinnitus, Larry, I do have it as a background noise and as you experience, it has never interfered with tuning. Originally it was like a hiss from a distant leaky steam pipe, now more often as soft cricket chirps.

Yes, I know there is a "health" forum here but it's even less active than the Google Groups Pianotech forum. I post it here because this is an active forum that is occasionally open to off topic conversations that would be lost in other appropriate forums.
Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome. Anyone here, (besides me), experience this? If yes, what have you done to reduce the symptoms?
For those unfamiliar with TTTS, it is neither tinnitus nor hearing loss. It's just noise.
