I tuned a Steinway & Sons Model S that was approximately 20 years old and had one previous owner. I noted that there was no decal on the soundboard which seemed unusual to me . It was a very nice piano from the Crown Jewel Collection with Sapele venner under clear lacquer. I have only seen one other Crown Jewel grand and had been asked by a dealer to fix an issue with the damper pedal. I did not notice the presence or absence of a decal. So should this Model S have a decal or not ?

Sounding board decals were fazed out decades ago.

You might see a Diaphragmatic Sounding Board decal at the second treble break.

I did see the small decal you mention but had no idea about phasing out of a larger decal decades ago. Do you have an idea of when this practice started ? I guess the absence of a decal does not mean the piano is not a genuine Steinway or is a rebuild.

    I have a customer with a 1936 S. No soundboard decal
so it's been a while since they put decals on that model.

    Mr. Kelly
FWIW Kehl and Kirkland have the soundboard decal ending in 1918. Reproduction decals started in the early 2000's. The diaphragmatic soundboard/accelerated action decal is called the belly decal and continues to the present.

Thanks Mr Karl now I know why there would be no decals on the soundboard for over 100 years ....
