Can you help me replace my most coarse hammer file, which I've lost?  It was more coarse than sandpaper, but it was not a woodworking file.  It was basically a large, metal emery board, approximately 1.5" X 8".  Can't remember where I got it.

What Jon said, but also Carl Lieberman just shared a very nice home made version somewhere. If you don't find one you like, ask him about it.

    All,
It’s a permagrit file, available through the supply houses. Either, fine, coarse or half and half.

HD and Lowes sell short ¼" strips of finished maple in various widths starting at about 1 1/2", which I cut into appropriate lengths and attach whatever grit paper I want using double sided tape. When the paper wears it's easy to remove and reapply a fresh piece. A single 2' length can make four 6" paddles with up to 8 different grits of paper. The wider strips can be helpful maintain square at the crown.

I've been trying to find the glass foot callus file I use.  I think this is it glass callus file.  I use various grits of the maple Mark describes, but use this glass file often for parts of the initial aggressive shaping or re-shaping. It cuts quite quickly and does not clog at all...have had it for about 7 or 8 years.
