A Potential frustrated, exasperated guitar player client contacted me about my tuning fee. As we continued the conversation it was clear he had been attempting to tune his own piano unbeknownst to him attempting to use an Autoharp tuning lever. He had worked himself up into a tizzy and was beginning to wonder if paying me might be worth the effort.
I shared with him about tuning hammers and the fellow who according to his wife who spent 7 hours attempting to tune his upright piano with a ratchet before throwing the ratchet. He loudly proclaimed to his wife to "call the piano tuner. It's the best money we've ever spent"
I kindly invited him to call me after he gets through screwing it up!

The "how to tune your own piano" video on YouTube that features a ratchet wrench receives more annual views than this site that we pay something like $18,000/year to google adwords to advertise.

i think it's time we made our own "how to tune your own piano" video with reminders to call us if you're in over your head.

And, I'm assuming you're going to charge extra to cover the extra time it takes to repair the damage and get everything stabilized again...

I had a client that was a prior DIY'er last year. Ended up tuning for her twice before she moved out of the area. I tell you what, my work was never more appreciated than by that client! If you struggle with feeling under appreciated, maybe suggest that your client try tuning it themselves.... Will lead to a loss of money but not a loss of business.

There is presently a pretty graphic example on PianoWorld of what a DIYer can do to a piano. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen the photos. Broken, mangled, twisted, gouged tuning pins. Yikes!

I ran into a guy I know tried to tune his own piano but would not admit it.  He was a guitar player.  There were notes that were an OCTAVE sharp.. how he didn't break the strings I have no idea.
