I have two clients with Steinway D concert grand pianos in their homes and  I'd like to educate myself to become more of an expert on these instruments.

What is the difference between a Hamburg Steinway and a NY Steinway and is there a quick way to instantly distinguish the two?

Is the Wippen the major difference or are there other differences?

Where can I learn more and educate myself on Steinway piano?

I'm currently trying to improve my knowledge of the Steinway piano.  What resources, books etc. could you recommend to me?

I'm a reader, so book recommendations would be taken most seriously!  Does Steinway provide training to independent piano technicians?

    Thanks!

    Sean

    Hi Sean,

David Andersen wrote an excellent article detailing the differences in the two Steinways:

    Hope it helps,

Hamburg hammer flanges are 1 mm longer, screw center to center pin, than NY flanges.
