Working on an Everett console recently, I espied some protuberances on the plate that I first took to be something to help production at the foundry. Then, with the help of info from Peter Grey, I remembered that Steinway uprights sometimes had holes drilled in the plate to mark the strike line. I believe the protuberances are indicating strike. Could anyone confirm (pics attached?)
I couldn’t really imagine putting new hammers on this piano, but it seems a great idea for help in finding the strike line, particularly for pianos where previous work is questionable (also assuming the original bridge location isn’t altered.)
