    Hello,

As I'm setting up a bank account for just piano tuning business I see that certain online banks don't offer any form of accepting cash.  That got me thinking: does anyone here have the statistics on what customers are more wiling to pay with given all major options?  Cash?  Check?  Debit?  Credit?  Online transfer?  Other?  Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks folks.

    Cobrun

It kind of goes in spurts. Some weeks it seems like every other customer gives me cash. Other weeks they are giving me credit cards.

I would suggest you don't deposit the cash, but keep it in a safe place in your house. Then take it out as necessary. It's always nice to have cash to pay for groceries, lunch etc. I also put all my $100 bills in an envelope and use all that money to go to the convention.

But you still have to report all forms of income to the IRS, regardless of where you keep it or if you deposit it or not.

    Cobrun,
I think payment methods may vary with local demographics and/or habits. Most of the pianos I service, for example, are for customers over 50. New customers moving in are affluent retirees, and most pay with personal checks. Very occasionally, a credit card, and cash rarely.  If I get cash.....I spend it.

I prefer checks over cash. Cash goes into my wallet, then evaporates. Checks go to the bank. But checks are going the way of the Dodo bird. One customer while writing out a check : " Oh, look, it has been a year since I wrote my past check.....Oh look, I wrote it out to you!"  That made me feel like a dinosaur.  Increasingly I get more direct deposits. That's OK, but sometimes there is a hassle with people forgetting to follow thorough or with the security password etc.

I don't have statistics handy, but in order my payments come in as Cheque, Credit Card (I use Square), E-transfer and Cash. As my bank doesn't allow coins in an ATM deposit and with tax my fee is an odd number, I write a personal cheque for the amount and deposit it in my business account, keeping the cash "on hand".
