I needed to pull an action from a console to replace  a few crumbling early plastic damper flanges so needed a temporary work bench , nothing in the 'piano room' was suitable  to use  until ta dah! removed the  piano bottom door  panel and placed it over the piano bench using the hidden interior side of the panel as my work surface ..perfect .

Like using the short stick of a grand to hang your suit coat on? I once heard someone say, "Steinway does this for us."

Oh yes this I have always done with my cardigan!  after first seeing  pianist and friend Anthony di Bonaventura do the same at  piano concerto orchestral rehearsals.

Martin, I've been doing that for years, as long as the panel is wide enough for the action. Place a pad/blanket on the bench first so as not to scratch either the bench or panel.  Haven't heard of the coat hanger aspect though, I'll use it!
