    Hello,

I have a Boston Grand hammer flange with a cracked bird's-eye.  See attached pic.  I think these flanges are unique in that they have the Steinway style rosette cut.  Steinway is not being very helpful with getting some - They will only sell shanks and flanges by the dozen, and if you want a whole set, I was told it would be several months for them to get them...  And of course they are ridiculously expensive.

Does anyone know of a place to get these types of flanges?  I was told WNG can make them, but will only sell in full sets.Boston Grand Hammer Flange

    Mr. Pritchard
If the school has more than one Boston grand then having a dozen shanks and flanges (really 11 since you need one already) on hand doesn't seem like a bad idea. You also might check to see if a Steinway flange fits if you have one of those in inventory.

    Hi Karl,

I originally ordered a dozen of shanks and flanges for both treble and bass, but after more than 3 weeks, Steinway has not fulfilled the order.  Apparently they have been moving their parts department and the Boston stuff is all boxed up somewhere.  Part of my problem is that our University fiscal year ends in 2 weeks and I need to know if that order will be fulfilled and what the total charge to my card will be so that I know how much more budget I can spend.  I was hoping someone knew of another source so I could just avoid the Steinway Parts department.  I honestly have not had very good luck dealing with them, especially when it comes to dealing with Boston parts.

David, I definitely feel your pain with the fiscal year funds issue and last-minute orders and the like! (Inset "ARRGGHH FACE).
However, with this being a wood flange and the top part being in tact, you still have LOTS of options! Here are some thoughts & ideas for you-what I would probably do. (This is assuming the piano is at your university, which you have indicated)
Option 1 - ordered a couple of shanks & flanges from Pianotek-overnight if you need to.
Option 2 - overnight a couple from Schaff or from Jurgen up in Canada (this could be a great option because you could explain to your powers that be that you are having to order a couple of these from a specialist in Canada just this ounce.
Then you could replace the flange later with the "real part" if you just wanted to...(although I would probably not do that if it were me..unless they insist)
Brooks LTD May even have one or two legit shanks/flanges they could sell you-these folks are awesome!
Last resort, repair this flange with C/A glue until the real parts arrive.

Brooks carries Boston flanges, made by Abel.

You could repair it and place it on A#7.

I'm 99.9% sure that Renner sells these flanges, although I'd have to check the parts sampler kit to be sure. You could email Renner and ask. All parts were in stock when I was at the Renner Academy last week.

However, I'm not sure if you'll be able to get just one. I think usually they come in sets only.  But... "ye have not because he ask not...."

That begs the question: is replacing the whole set something that's an option? Yes, it's way more expensive, but if you are seeing one broken it's quite possible that there are more coming in the near future. Something to consider and talk about with your customer.
