    List(s),

Has anyone ever seen the finish on a fallboard do this? We have other Falcones, but none of them have had this problem. This particular piano has gotten some direct sun on the fallboard for part of it's life.

Any thoughts about why it happens and how to remedy it (short of refinishing) would be much appreciated.

I believe so Ruth, ...like someone buried before their time, trying to dig their way out of a coffin! I've seen plenty of fingernail scratches on fallboards, and "orange-peeled" (fractured) finishes before. But this is a first for me.

    Alan,

I was thinking fingernails at first, but so much of the damage appears in straight lines like someone took a pointed tool & "scribed" their way down or up. If strictly done with human nails, I'd hate to meet that person in a dead-end alley on a dark & stormy night!

The Falcone name must be some brass imbedded into the wood as I see no damage across it as would be seen with a decal. I see the more "traditional" fingernail damage down close to the keys. That appears different from the area higher up.

I'm afraid a lot of careful sanding is in order, along with many multiple coats of black to build the surface back up to be reasonably level with the Falcone inlay. I will be curious as to how this plays out. Let us know if you can. Good luck!

    Alan,

First, let me congratulate your parents on getting the spelling of you name right! ;-)

I agree that the fingernail scratches and the gold/green fractures appear to be two separate issues. And the Falcone name is brass inlay.

It sure looks to me like the cracks are the result of stress relief in the clear coat. Notice no cracks over the brass because the metal keeps the finish from moving.  If they used catalyzed lacquer that might explain it since that finish must be kept to a minimal thickness. Since the brass logo is a few thousands thick they had to put more clear to bring it level with the brass than they had to on the rest of the case.
