I had a concert scheduled for today, and it obviously got postponed. Since I had the music prepared, and had ready access to an empty recital hall last week, I decided I might as well make live videos of the pieces on the concert and share them. So here are links for those who might be interested. Something different to pass the time.

I open with music by one of my favorite Mexican composers, Federico Ibarra. I have performed and recorded all his music for piano solo during the past several years, and just completed a recording of his last piano sonata (which he did me the honor of dedicating to me), as well as a short piece he sent me last summer.

    Federico Ibarra Sonata #7 (2012)
La Aniquilación de un Sueño (The evaporation of a dream) (2019)

Then a wonderful piece by a composer from Argentina (now at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). He spent a couple years at UNM in the 90s, when he first came to the US. He writes in a style based on tango, but a completely different take from Piazzola's.
    Alejandro Rutty, Qualia (2015)

The second half of the concert was dedicated to  Heitor Villa-Lobos' set of sixteen Cirandas, written in 1926 and based on popular Brazilian songs. A ciranda is a circle dance, done both by children and by adults as a social activity. I found a source for the original songs on which they were based, and I'll give a short version of the lyrics to each below. The links are to YouTube videos I made Thursday. I also made a playlist of them all.

Terezinha de Jesus Terezinha de Jesus (woman's name) fell while crossing the street, and three gentlemen came to her aid, hat in hand. The first was her father, the second her brother, and the third was the one to whom she gave her hand.
A Condessa O Countess of France, I have come to seek the hand of one of your daughters.
Senhora Dona Sancha Senhora Dona Sancha (woman's name), covered in gold and silver, take off your mask so we can see your face.
O Cravo Brigou com a Rosa/Sapo Jururu The chrysanthemum fought with the rose, and they ended up in tatters. Why does the Jururu frog on the riverbank cry? Because it is cold.
Pobre Cega My mother woke (from sleeping so much) and heard a knock on the door from the poor blind woman. Give her some bread and wine and send her on her way.
Passa, Passa Gavião On the bridge of Alençon, many people pass by. The gentlemen go like this, the ladies like this . . .
Xo, Passarinho O servant of my father, don't cut the hair my father brushed. My stepmother buried it under the fig tree. Shoo little bird!
Vamos Atras da Serra, Calunga Let's go to the other side of the mountain, Calunga
Fui a Tororo I went to Tororo to get water to drink, and there was none. But on the bank I found a brown-haired girl, and if you don't sleep tonight, you can sleep tomorrow. Now I am no longer alone, as I have Maria for my love.
O Pintor de Cannahy Haven't found any lyrics to this one, a shame.
Nesta Rua, Nesta Rua On this street there is a wood called solitude. In that wood dwells an angle who stole my heart.
If I stole your heart, you also stole mine. If I stole your heart it is because I love you.
Olha O Passarinho, Dominé Look at the little bird, Dominé, caught in a noose, Dominé, give me a kiss, Dominé, give me a hug, Dominé
A Procura de uma Agulha She came from far away, trying to find a needle she lost.
A Canoa Virou The canoe turned over because so and so didn't know how to row.
Que Lindos Olhos What beautiful eyes she has!
Có, có, có So and so is short and not very pretty, co, co, co, but she is my love anyway, co, co, co!

I checked to see that the links were correct, and discovered that I uploaded the raw files of the Ibarra, rather than the versions I had edited (just to clip beginning and end). So I edited them just now using the YouTube editor, which they say will take a few hours to appear. Thus, there are a couple false starts - alas! - plus you get to see me turn on and off the camera. (All the rest of the videos I did correctly).

I've been a bit distracted, like everybody else I'm sure. Hope all of you are doing well. I'm still going in to the empty building and doing piano work, until/unless policies change. I doubt I'll see much of any faculty or students the rest of the semester, as all classes are to be on line/virtual, no personal contact. The university is committed to letting students complete the semester with full credit, and allow them to graduate if they were going too. That means we may put on degree recitals without audience, doing video streaming.

Otherwise, it's awful quiet and lonesome. A strange way to spend my last three months before retirement.

Thank you for sharing these, Fred! Enjoying them with my morning Cortado and a pipe (working from home this week). The Ibarra is great! That last movement of #7 gave you and the piano a work out. Sounds like the unisons held up pretty well for the most part ;) Looking forward to the rest!

These are also my last three months at Murray State (finishing up my 50th semester here, 25 years), and like you, this was not what I had imagined my last semester would be!

No performances at all! Students with degree recitals will submit or stream their performances (with no collaborators) to their applied teacher, and maybe a committee for the hearing, and if they pass that they get the recital credit. God only knows what the instruments will be like! I feel especially bad for our seniors, and one in particular who had both a concerto and a senior recital ready, and sounding fantastic judging from what I heard of it walking by his practice room.

The students are back from Spring Break this week in small carefully managed batches to return instruments they won't need, move out, and collect what they will need for on-line classes. My wife is at elevated risk due to an arthritis medication that compromises her immune system, so I've elected to work from home this week, and  back to school next when everyone clears out and they do what they can to disinfect the building.

I've got a rebuilding project I'll get to finish up at a more leisurely pace, plus get caught up with a bunch of deferred maintenance. And I'll have some time to make some notes for my successor about this very strange position that I wish I'd had when I started!

Keep making great music, my friend!
    Stay safe and sane everyone!

Beautiful playing as always Fred, thanks for sharing this with us.  And sorry you weren't able to share this with a live audience :(

Would you be OK with me sharing links to this on the /r/piano reddit?

Thanks, Nathan! By all means, share as you like. They are public files.
