    Hi gang,

I wonder if any of you at music schools have lent out pianos to students during the pandemic.  So far we haven't but there's a couple of students we're considering doing that for, while we continue with a mostly remote format for the spring semester.  So, please let me know how you've arranged it if this is something that you have experience with.  For example:
    - How many students have a loaner?
    - Grands or uprights?
    - How did you decide which piano to loan out?
    - Who paid for the move, the student or the school?
    - Was there a deposit?
    - Was there a contract or some sort of written/unwritten understanding?
    - How long is the loan for?

    Thanks!

    Hi Zeno.

We have leant out 10 Clavinova's and 5 Baldwin 243's to students and no cost to them. I don't know the specifics of contracts, but I or my assistant take care of tunings or issues with the instruments.  It will continue for spring semester. Piano majors only. I picked them out. No grands, mostly since no students have room for them.

It's fine with me and my assistant usually goes out to tune them. I took care of a squeaky pedal

We have one upright piano loaned out to a student.  The rest of the piano majors had access to instruments they could practice on.  The piano was one of eight pre-1980 Yamaha U1s in our collection.  Its place to live was disappearing, so it seemed an obvious choice for redeployment.  The action had been thoroughly reconditioned, including new hammers, in the recent past, so there is every expectation that it will serve the student well.

When it was determined that only one student needed a loaner piano, the decision was made to have the school pick up the cost of the move both ways.  The loan was technically a rental, with the rental fee being our standard per-semester for rate a band instrument.  We used our standard student instrument rental contract.  The loan is for two semesters, with the possibility of an extension if appropriate.
