    Someone recently sent this picture to me from a piano used by Josef Hofmann. Anyone aware of this modification or it's purpose? Certainly looks like a modified lyre front plate hanging it all together at the front but beyond that I'm baffled!

    Looks like a supplemental damper pedal, set toward the treble (i.e., looks like the added pedal also raises the dampers). I think I recall that Hoffman was small, and that a special keyboard was made for him, with narrower keys. This might be for when you need to play in the high treble a lot, and might actually shift your body on the bench to do so. If he had short legs as well, that might explain why this was made.

    Hofmann was a teacher.
