Today I am announcing a Summer Seminar Series sponsored by chapters in the S.E. Region.  These Seminars will cover a variety of piano-related subjects and are open to all piano technicians.  However, "seating" is limited to 100 participants, and P.T.G. members have priority.  These classes will be conducted via Zoom. To Register, send me an email with your name and P.T.G. status.  Entrance by date & time of response. I will send a link to respondents.the day of the class. A standby list will be maintained.  Timely sign-in will be essential.

Every year as SERVP I have advocated and insisted Education is a core component and function of P.T.G. We venerate the R.P.T. certification, acknowledge it is only the beginning of professional competency, yet fail to inspire or insure an R.P.T.'s continuing improvement in quality service. The identification of standards and quality work is core to our beliefs.

P.T.G. must "Promote Quality Service for the World's Pianos".  Members must be able to recognize quality before they can provide quality work.  Historically, the chapter has served as the primary source for "sharing" these key aspects of knowledge and was supplemented through seminars, regional conferences, and the annual institute. Our learning model is changing.

The first Summer Seminar Series Class will be "Understanding Stability Using Non-Speaking Length (N.S.L.) Tension Analysis" sponsored by the Atlanta Chapter.  The Instructor will be Mark Cerisano, R.P.T., B.Sc.(Mech.Eng.), Dip.Ed.

The class will start at 8pm Eastern Time Zone on July 7th

Understanding Stability Using Non-Speaking Length (N.S.L.) Tension Analysis

There are many instructions that I have followed in the past to help me get superior stability, but none have worked 100% of the time.

Often, these instructions are meant only to be used on certain types of pianos, but that specification is often left out when the directions are given.

In order to describe a system that produces a stable string 100% of the time, it may be necessary to re-evaluate what we think is going on when we tune a piano string so that our understanding of what is going on can be used to predict how the string will behave and how to tune a stable string and what to do differently if the string isn't stable. The goal being to describe how the string behaves so that we can predict its actual behavior 100% of the time.

    That's Non-Speaking Length Tension Analysis.

    About the Instructor

    Mark Cerisano, RPT, B.Sc.(Mech.Eng.), Dip.Ed.

Mark began his study of piano technology by immersing himself into the field when he was a high school music teacher after he had worked professionally as a mechanical engineer and played trumpet professionally on cruise ships.

His initial training involved joining the P.T.G., volunteering in a rebuilding facility, and paying for workshops. But the biggest influence on his skills came when he started teaching others how to tune pianos. Students often press instructors to know exactly why and how something works. Mark was not happy when he exhausted the standard explanations and then had to resort to the infamous "Just tune a thousand pianos" line. so he went to work to discover just what makes tuning a piano by ear so difficult and in the process discovered a lot of very interesting things. His methods now help him and his students produce tunings that are much more accurate, precise, and efficient. One of those methods is the Non-Speaking Length Tension Analysis Method for Superior Stability.
