  • 1.  Length of the Steinway D

    Hello List,
Would anybody know if the the size of the Steinway D (length) has changed over the years?
The specs nowadays mentions 8'11'' 3/4.
We have a D here at the University built in the 1970s which appears to be at least one inch shorter. Just curious.

According to the Steinway Technical Reference Guide the 8'-11 ¾" length dates back to 1915.

It's all spelled out in the Kehl/Kirkland book under the chapter on the Steinway D.

    Length varied from 8'10" to 8'11 3/4".

    Hi, Bill,

I'm traveling; and do not have access to the Kehl/Kirkland book. If
they don't spend much time talking about rim bending; and how that
effects the rest of the manufacture, including the length of a given
instrument; the measurements may not make much sense to those who don't
work on what LaRoy used to call "antique, low-tech" pianos.

    Hope all is well.

    Kind regards.

    Horace

Oh -- with all Steinways the actual length may not be the official length......

I thought I read someplace that the measurement on Steinways is taken from the furthest edge of the lid at the tail and not the rim ....
