Hello.?? We have several fairly new adjustable benches.?? The seat lifting
jack is mounted to the side of the leg and stretcher frame.?? The heads
of the screws that mount the jack to the frame keep getting sheared
off.?? First, I got the old screws out and replaced them but still
happened.?? I'd find the seat collapsed and the screw heads on the floor.

I thought maybe small lag bolts would be strong enough, but I wanted to
check here to see if anyone had a better idea.

    Thanks.

Hi Robert, are these Jansen "traditional" adjustable benches? We have quite a few OTHER issues with these-usually easily fixable and if not, Jansen repairs, fixes, & reupholsters their benches for SUPER affordable amounts.
Is this another brand? Perhaps a pic or two?

    Kevin

I contacted Jansen last winter about reupholstering a set of benches and they told me that the do not do that. I have gotten the new bushings from them and repaired the mechanism.

I think that there is something going on with the benches that is not normal for screw heads to break off. Normally the wood breaks first.

Oh my apologies Rex. They must have changed policies. Could it be that they only repair for universities? I could see them dropping the Re-upoltery service. I've always thought that was crazy good that they offered that.
I can't picture which bolts are shearing off on Jansen benches. I just completely took apart and refurbished my first one (with a Kit) last semester. I found it rather fun. Time-consuming but enjoyable. Keep us posted!

    Hello Robert!
Try a hardware store - Lowe's comes to mind for me. In the area of fasteners / hardware, look for drawers / cabinets with hardened bolts / screws. It has been quite some time since I last searched for such. The Society of Automotive Engineers or SAE specs out the qualities for stronger fasteners & they get labeled as SAE 5 or SAE 8, if I'm remembering right. Note also, if you go for a screw / bolt of a larger diameter, the attachment site on the bench may lose material to accommodate them. You may need to bolster or reinforce that location to handle the load as well as it did before. Alternate fastener source could be most any "auto parts store." Good luck!

What's the brand?  How 'fairly new' are they? Can you reach the manufacturer/dealer?
    Photos?
